Small children come to preschool with backpacks that look huge for their little bodies. Backpacks swing from their shoulders, yet they walk proudly. Mistakes happen all over preschool, and that’s positive. Kids spill glue, knock over towers, and forget names. Such instances enable learning in children. Their learning is not through sitting around and doing nothing. Some children talk constantly, tell stories, and ask questions. Other kids are quiet and observe. In their own way both these kinds of children are learning.
Adults may see art time as messy or confusing. Kids might present a purple picture and claim it’s dad cooking. It may seem odd to adults, but it is meaningful for the child. Being creative is more important than being perfect.
Independence develops slowly but surely. Opening the lunchbox alone marks early independence. Another child might succeed in tying shoes after several tries. These little gains are highly significant. They develop self-confidence and self-belief.
Teachers manage a significant, tough role. Teachers handle several emotional situations at the same time. Kids experience a range of emotions simultaneously. Teachers respond calmly and clearly. Teachers create a safe space for every child.
At times, parents have concerns regarding the development of the child. Early childhood education is not a race. Preschool is like planting seeds that grow over time. Some kids learn quickly, others more slowly. Each of them will develop separately.
At the end of the day, children share simple stories. They can say, I ran fast, or I painted, or even I cried, but then I was better. It might be noisy and chaotic, but it is packed with significant learning and development on a daily basis.
